India’s first hydrogen-powered train will begin regular passenger service on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana from Sunday, July 19, marking a significant step in Indian Railways’ move towards cleaner and greener transport.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the train on Friday. The service, themed as the “NaMo Green Rail”, will be operated and maintained by the Delhi Division of Northern Railway.
Northern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay told Indian Express, “The hydrogen train will commence its commercial operation on Jind-Sonipat route from July 19.”
Route, train numbers and travel time
The hydrogen train will operate as train numbers 74010 and 74009 between Jind Junction and Sonipat.
Developed by the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the train will cover the 89-km route in around two hours with an operational speed of up to 75 kmph. It will run daily from Monday to Sunday as a Hydrogen Fuel DMU.

The timetable will come into effect from July 19, 2026, with the service operating daily under the ordinary unreserved fare category.
India has taken a monumental leap into green mobility. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the nation’s very first indigenously developed Hydrogen Fuel Cell Train. Regular daily operations for the general public are officially scheduled to begin.
Running on hydrogen fuel cell technology, the train generates its own electricity onboard. The only byproduct it releases is water vapor and heat—meaning absolute zero tailpipe emissions and significantly reduced noise pollution compared to traditional diesel engines.
Here is everything you need to know about the route, timings, stops, and surprisingly cheap tickets.
📍 Route Details
The hydrogen train operates under the Northern Railway zone in the state of Haryana, specifically running on the Jind – Sonipat section.
Total Distance: 89 kilometers
Travel Time: Exactly 2 hours
Operational Speed: Up to 75 kmph (though it is structurally capable of touching 110 kmph).
⏱️ Train Timings
The service operates as a daily passenger train, running a convenient round-trip schedule between the two cities:
Train No. 04913 (Jind to Sonipat): Departs from Jind Junction at 5:05 AM and arrives at Sonipat Junction at 7:35 AM.
Train No. 04914 (Sonipat to Jind): Departs from Sonipat Junction at 8:05 AM and reaches back to Jind Junction at 10:35 AM.
🚉 List of Stoppages
The train will travel via Pandu Pindara and will halt at 12 intermediate stations along the 89-km stretch:
Jind City
Pandu Pindara
Lalit Khera
Bhambeva
Ishapur Kheri
Butana
Khandrai
Gohana
Rabhra
Lath
Mohana Haryana
Barwasni
🎫 Ticket Price & Capacity
To make sustainable travel accessible to the everyday commuter, the Indian Railways has kept the fares incredibly nominal.
Fare Structure: The minimum ticket starts at just ₹5, with the maximum ticket price for the entire stretch capped around ₹25. This makes it cheaper than a standard platform ticket in many locations!
Capacity: The train is built with a 10-coach configuration (2 power cars and 8 passenger coaches) and can comfortably accommodate up to 2,600 passengers per trip, making it one of the highest-capacity hydrogen trains globally.
What’s Next? Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared that safety testing is already underway for the Sonipat-Delhi section. In the next phase, the route will be extended directly from Jind to New Delhi, followed by the rollout of 34 more hydrogen trains across the country.India's sustainable transport sector is taking a massive leap forward tomorrow with the official launch of the country’s first-ever hydrogen-powered passenger train. Promising zero emissions—emitting only water vapor and warm air—the train is being introduced as a highly affordable green alternative for daily commuters.
Here is everything you need to know about the maiden route, timings, ticket pricing, and key stops.
📋 The Route and Key Details
Northern Railway is pioneering this rollout, utilizing the green technology to replace older diesel units on a highly frequented commuter corridor in Haryana.
Maiden Route: Rewari to Rohtak (via Jhajjar)
Distance Covered: Approximately 81 km
Ticket Fare: Set at a baseline of ₹10 for the entire journey, matching the current minimum pricing for local unreserved trains to encourage massive public adoption of green transit.
🕒 Train Timings & Schedule
The hydrogen train will operate as a daily passenger service. To accommodate working professionals and students, the initial schedule features a morning and evening breakdown:
| Train Number / Direction | Departure Time | Arrival Time | Frequency |
| Rewari to Rohtak (Special) | 07:40 AM | 09:45 AM | Daily |
| Rohtak to Rewari (Special) | 04:30 PM | 06:40 PM | Daily |
🚉 Major Halts & Stops
The train is designed to ensure seamless connectivity between major rural and suburban hubs connecting the two industrial cities. The primary stops along the 81 km stretch include:
Rewari Junction (Origin)
Gokalgarh
Palhawas
Jhajjar (Major commercial stop)
Asthal Bohar Junction
Rohtak Junction (Termination)
🍃 Why This Matters: The Green Tech
Unlike traditional diesel-electric multiple units (DEMUs), hydrogen trains utilize fuel cells that combine hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity.
Environmental Impact: This technology eliminates carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$), and particulate matter entirely from the propulsion process. A single hydrogen train running on this route is estimated to eliminate over 2.3 metric tons of carbon emissions annually compared to its diesel counterpart.
Following the pilot run on the Rewari-Rohtak network, Indian Railways plans to expand the "Hydrogen for Heritage" initiative to eco-sensitive hilly terrains, including the Kalka-Shimla and Darjeeling Himalayan routes later this year.
