Nana Patekar death: Actor's body reaches Pune for state funeral; CM Devendra Fadnavis offers floral tributes

Veteran actor Nana Patekar passed away on October 8, 2026, at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa.

Following his sudden demise, his mortal remains were airlifted to Pune, where dignitaries, family members, and fans gathered to pay their final respects. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with other state ministers and leaders, offered floral tributes as the actor's body arrived.

He was accorded a state funeral with full government honours, and his last rites were performed at his farmhouse in Donje village (Nanachi Wadi) in Pune district. Tributes from leaders, film fraternity members, and admirers across the country poured in to honor his legendary contribution to Indian cinema, theater, and social service.

The life journey of veteran actor, writer, and filmmaker Nana Patekar (born Vishwanath Patekar) is a remarkable story of grit, artistic brilliance, intense discipline, and deep social commitment. Spanning over four decades, his path from humble beginnings to becoming one of Indian cinema's most revered icons is defined by unforgettable performances and a deeply grounded personal philosophy.

1. Childhood, Early Struggles, and Education

  • Early Hardships: Born on January 1, 1951, in Murud-Janjira (in present-day Maharashtra's Raigad district), Nana Patekar faced financial hardships early in life. When he was 13, his family’s business was taken over by an acquaintance, forcing him to start working to support his family.

  • Poverty and Poster Painting: As a teenager living in Mumbai's Chunabhatti area, he painted movie billboards and posters, earning around ₹35 a month.

  • Artistic Roots: Despite the financial struggle, he pursued his passion for the arts, studying at the prestigious Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Arts in Mumbai, which laid a strong visual and creative foundation for his career. His journey was also shaped by profound personal losses, including the passing of his father to a heart attack when Patekar was 28, and the tragic loss of his elder son, Durvasa, at age two.

2. Theatre Foundations and Film Career

Nana Patekar began his career on the Marathi stage, which honed his distinct voice modulation, precise pauses, and commanding presence.

  • The Breakthrough Decade (1978–1988):

    • He made his feature film debut in Muzaffar Ali's Gaman (1978).

    • Spent nearly a decade doing small roles in parallel and regional cinema, including a striking portrayal of Nathuram Godse in the British TV series Lord Mountbatten: The Last Viceroy (1986).

    • Gained wider notice with gritty supporting acts in films like Ankush (1986), Pratighaat (1987), and Andha Yudh (1987).

    • Achieved international recognition with Mira Nair’s Academy Award-nominated masterpiece Salaam Bombay! (1988), playing the chilling pimp Baba.

  • Stardom and National Acclaim (1989–2000s):

    • Parinda (1989): His unforgettable performance as the pyrophobic, menacing crime lord Anna Seth won him his first National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Filmfare Award.

    • Prahaar: The Final Attack (1991): He made his directorial debut with this military drama, writing and starring as an Indian Army commando.

    • Krantiveer (1994): Playing the iconic, fiery everyman Pratap Narayan Tilak who rails against societal corruption, he won the National Film Award for Best Actor and the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

    • Agni Sakshi (1996): His terrifying portrayal of a sadistic husband won him another National Film Award (Best Supporting Actor).

    • Other landmark dramatic roles included Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), Ab Tak Chhappan (2004) as an encounter specialist, and Apaharan (2005).

  • Comic Mastery and Later Masterpieces:

    • Welcome (2007): Patekar successfully broke away from intense action/drama molds to deliver a timeless comedic performance as the lovable gangster Uday Shetty, a role he reprised in Welcome Back (2015).

    • Raajneeti (2010): Portrayed a shrewd, politically astute strategist modelled after characters from the Mahabharata.

    • Natsamrat (2016): Widely considered a late-career tour de force, his portrayal of Ganpatrao Belwalkar—an aging, tragic theatre legend—won him universal critical acclaim and a Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Marathi).

3. Military Dedication and Philanthropy

  • Territorial Army Service: Beyond the screen, Patekar had a deep bond with the Indian armed forces. He trained rigorously for three years with the Maratha Light Infantry for Prahaar, subsequently joining the Territorial Army as an honorary Captain. He actively served near the Line of Control during the 1999 Kargil War and eventually retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2013.

  • Social Activism: Alongside actor Nana Patekar's artistic accomplishments, he co-founded the Naam Foundation in 2015, channeling personal resources and public donations to support drought-affected farmers and widows across rural Maharashtra.

4. Personal Life and Philosophy

Despite being a celebrated cinematic figure, Patekar chose a remarkably austere and unpretentious life. He lived simply, famously splitting his time between a modest apartment in Mumbai and his sprawling 27-acre farmhouse near Pune. In interviews, he frequently emphasized that he never felt a part of traditional Bollywood party culture, finding his true peace in nature and village surroundings.

Nana Patekar passed away on October 8, 2026, at the age of 75 in Goa. He leaves behind an enduring legacy as an actor who proved that raw talent, stillness, truth, and vocal command could redefine Indian cinema without relying on conventional star formulas.
