India’s "Third Eye" in Space (or "Eye in the Sky")

 The ISRO satellite widely referred to as India’s "Third Eye" in Space (or "Eye in the Sky") is EOS-05 (formerly designated under the GISAT-1 series).

Launched aboard the GSLV Mk II-F17 rocket from Sriharikota, EOS-05 marks a massive technological leap forward as India’s first dedicated state-of-the-art geo-imaging Earth observation satellite placed directly in a geosynchronous orbit.

What Makes EOS-05 India's "Third Eye"?

Unlike traditional low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that pass over a given geographic region only once or twice a day, EOS-05 is parked in a geosynchronous orbit (~36,000 km altitude). Because it orbits at the same rotational speed as Earth, it remains virtually stationary over the Indian subcontinent and South Asia. This grants India uninterrupted, near real-time surveillance across its entire landmass and surrounding maritime regions.

3. Environmental & Agricultural Tracking Equipped with hyperspectral and multispectral sensors, EOS-05 allows scientists and agricultural bodies to perform real-time monitoring of crop health, soil moisture levels, water body depletion, and deforestation patterns across seasons.

4. Weather & Meteorological Forecasting Operating in high orbit alongside Indian meteorological satellites, it helps meteorologists detect rapidly forming atmospheric turbulences, storm tracks, and oceanic sea-surface conditions long before they strike coastal areas.
