How was IAF Wing Commander honey-trapped into sharing defence data with Pakistan?

New Delhi: A serving Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander was arrested in May for allegedly sharing sensitive defence information and classified documents with a Pakistani intelligence operative, Delhi Police said on Saturday.

The 44-year-old officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested on May 30 after a complaint from the IAF. Police said a charge sheet was filed before the competent court on July 30. The case is currently sub judice.

The officer was booked under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act and is currently in judicial custody at Tihar jail. The IAF said he had been under surveillance before being handed over to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

“Based upon a complaint by Indian Airforce authorities, a serving airforce officer was arrested on May 30 for allegations of being honey trapped by a Pakistani Intelligence Operative. Following the investigation, a charge sheet was submitted before the competent court on July 30. The matter is sub-judice,” the Delhi Police said.

Woman allegedly gained his trust

According to investigators, the officer was contacted by a woman through social media earlier this year. The two allegedly exchanged messages and spoke over a secure communication app.

Police suspect the woman gained the officer’s confidence before allegedly persuading him to share confidential defence-related information through photographs and videos. Investigators are also examining claims that he shared details concerning troop movements and deployment.

Officials said the woman may have been working for handlers based in Pakistan and could be part of a wider espionage network.

Suspicious app under investigation

Investigators are also looking into an app that the woman allegedly asked the officer to install on a colleague’s mobile phone. Officials suspect it may have functioned as spyware or remote-access malware capable of extracting data and tracking the device.

The IAF intelligence wing reportedly detected the officer’s activities through electronic surveillance before sharing evidence with the Delhi Police Special Cell.

The investigation is continuing to establish the full extent of the information allegedly shared and whether the case is connected to a larger espionage network.

The case involving a serving 44-year-old Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander came to light following his arrest by the Delhi Police's Special Cell. According to details from law enforcement and intelligence officials:

1. Initial Contact via Social Media

The Wing Commander, who was reportedly experiencing personal issues, was contacted on a social media platform by a Pakistani intelligence operative (PIO) posing as a female. Over time, the operative built rapport and gained his trust through continuous messaging and telephonic conversations on a secured messaging app.

2. Extraction of Classified Documents

Once trust was established, the operative tricked the officer into sharing sensitive military details, confidential defence documents, and photos/videos relating to Indian defence systems.

3. Attempted Device Compromise via Malware

Beyond leaking documents directly, the operative instructed the Wing Commander to install a specific mobile application on a colleague's phone. This app acted as covert remote-access malware/spyware:

  • It allowed remote access to track real-time locations.

  • It intercepted communication logs and extracted stored data from the secondary phone.

4. Detection and Surveillance

The IAF’s central intelligence wing detected suspicious activities through electronic surveillance and placed the officer under active surveillance for several months. Once sufficient evidence was gathered, the IAF alerted central agencies and handed the officer over to the Delhi Police Special Cell.

5. Legal Action & Status

  • Arrest Date: May 30, 2026.

  • Charges: Booked under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) for compromising national security.

  • Chargesheet: Submitted by Delhi Police before a Saket court on July 30, 2026.

  • Current Status: The officer remains in judicial custody at Tihar Jail while legal proceedings continue.
