In a joint operation, Indian Army Intelligence and the Rajasthan Police uncovered a major counterfeit military combat uniform network in Rajasthan’s border district of Sriganganagar, seizing nearly 1,000 meters of unauthorized Army-pattern fabric.
The operation originated from an earlier seizure of counterfeit military cloth in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. Investigators traced the supply chain back to a manufacturing unit and local distributor firm in Sriganganagar, which was secretly supplying the fake digital-camouflage fabric to local vendors in Sriganganagar, Suratgarh, and Lalgarh Jattan.
Why This Uncovering Is a Critical Security Concern
1. Infiltration and Impersonation Risk
The primary danger of open-market, unauthorized uniform distribution is impersonation. Insurgents, foreign intelligence operatives, or terror outfits can buy or tailor these replica combat fatigues to blend in seamlessly with troops.
Past terror incidents in India (such as attacks on military stations and airbases) relied heavily on attackers posing as security personnel to breach inner perimeters and bypass initial checkpoints without raising alarms.
2. Proximity to Sensitive Border Zones
Sriganganagar and nearby Suratgarh are strategical border regions in Rajasthan located near the India-Pakistan international border, housing vital military cantonments, logistics hubs, and air bases. Crucially, the Army secured intellectual property rights and patents over this specific pattern precisely to ban open-market retail sales and restrict manufacturing strictly to authorized defense supply chains. The emergence of counterfeit replicas undermines this centralized security measure.

In high-alert or emergency combat scenarios, distinguishing between friendly soldiers and hostile intruders relies heavily on visual identification. Counterfeit uniforms dilute standard operational security, creating potential hesitation or confusion during tactical responses.
5. Legal and Regulatory Enforcement
Under existing defense regulations, the unauthorized manufacturing, storing, selling, or wearing of Army-pattern combat uniforms is a punishable legal offense. Authorities are expanding the investigation to trace whether the counterfeit fabric manufactured in Rajasthan has been distributed to other states across India.
