Vande Bharat train meal rules: Prices, booking, food options and more

Planning a Vande Bharat journey? Before you pack your bags, take a moment to understand the train’s meal policy. From meal prices and menu options to who gets food onboard and when, these important details can make your travel experience smoother.
Meals are optional: Passengers can choose whether or not to include meals while booking their Vande Bharat ticket. If you don’t want the onboard meal service, simply opt out during the booking process.
You can still buy food onboard: Even if you skip meals while booking, you can purchase food during your journey, subject to availability. This gives passengers the flexibility to decide later if they want a meal.© News18
No extra charge for ordering onboard: Earlier, passengers who opted out had to pay an additional ₹50 if they ordered food on the train. That extra fee has now been removed, so everyone pays the same meal price. No Indian train journey is complete without chai. Meal prices differ by class: The cost of meals depends on your travel class. For Chair Car (CC), breakfast is ₹122, lunch/dinner is ₹222, and evening tea & snacks is₹66. For the Executive Class (EC), breakfast is ₹155, lunch/dinner is ₹244, and evening tea & snacks is ₹105. Morning tea is available for ₹15 in both classes.
Expect hygienically packed meals: Vande Bharat serves branded, ready-to-eat (RTE) meals that are packed for hygiene and convenience. Menus may vary slightly depending on the train’s route and journey timing.© News18
Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are available: Passengers can usually choose between vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals while booking. Availability may vary depending on the route and catering arrangements.
Meals are planned according to your journey: The type of meal served depends on your travel schedule. For example, morning journeys may include breakfast, while longer daytime trips usually include lunch, evening snacks or dinner based on the train timings.

Check your ticket for meal details: If you’re unsure whether meals are included in your booking, check your ticket or fare breakdown. It will mention whether catering charges have been added.

The catering rules for the Vande Bharat Express prioritize flexibility. Catering is completely optional, and the dynamic meal schedule adapts entirely to the length and timing of your journey.

1. Booking Rules: Mandatory or Optional?

  • The Opt-Out Choice: Catering is optional. When booking your ticket via the IRCTC portal or app, you can manually opt out of meals by choosing the "No Meal" option.

  • Fare Adjustment: Opting out significantly lowers your ticket cost, saving you anywhere between ₹200 to ₹600 per ticket, depending on the number of meals mapped to that route.

  • Deciding Later: If you change your mind after booking but before the chart is prepared (usually up to 4 hours before departure), you can still add or cancel meals through the IRCTC online portal.

2. On-Board Meal Prices & Classes

The cost of food varies by train class: Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC).

Standard Pre-Booked Catering Charges

These rates are bundled directly into your ticket fare if you opt for meals:

Service TypeChair Car (CC)Executive Chair Car (EC)Typical Items Included
Morning Tea / Coffee₹15₹15Premix tea/coffee, digestive biscuits
Breakfast₹122₹155Upma, poha, cutlets, or omelet; juice, bakery item
Lunch / Dinner₹222₹244Soup, basmati rice, dal, paneer/chicken gravy, rotis, curd, dessert
Evening Tea & Snacks₹66₹105Hot snack (samosa/kachori), sandwich, popcorn, sweets, beverage

⚠️ The "On-Board" Rule: If you opt out of meals during booking but decide to order a standard or Ready-to-Eat (RTE) meal directly from the catering staff on board, IRCTC levies an additional service charge of ₹50 per meal.

3. What’s on the Menu? (Food Options)

IRCTC uses a cyclic regional menu, meaning the exact dishes rotate weekly and often showcase local flavors depending on where the train is running (e.g., regional breakfast options like Millets Pongal in the south or stuffed paranthas in the north).

Vegetarian vs. Non-Vegetarian

  • Strict Segregation: Separate utensils and distinct color-coded service trays are strictly mandated to separate vegetarian and non-vegetarian food preparation.

  • Veg Options: Features items like paneer butter masala, rich dals, vegetable pulao/basmati rice, tawa rotis, premium curd, and branded ice cream or halwa.

  • Non-Veg Options: Standard meals offer boneless chicken dishes (such as butter chicken or regional chicken gravies) and egg options (masala omelets or scrambled eggs for breakfast).

Ready-To-Eat (RTE) Alternative

For current-booking passengers or those who opted out but need a quick bite, IRCTC stocks branded, dehydrated Ready-to-Eat (RTE) tubs. These require only hot water to prepare on board (e.g., mini-meals like Rajma Chole Rice, Bisi Bele Bhath, Poha, or instant cup noodles) and are served with a dessert bar or beverage package.

4. How Meals Are Distributed based on Your Journey

Meals are served dynamically based on how many hours you travel and your boarding/deboarding times.

  • Short Legs: If you are only traveling between two close stations (e.g., a 1-hour run early in the morning), you might only be served morning tea or a quick beverage.

  • Long-Haul/Intercity Legs: If your journey spans across prime hours (e.g., departing at 6:00 AM and arriving at 2:00 PM), your ticket fare automatically maps both Breakfast and Lunch into your itinerary.
