According to an update on the Australian Classification Board website, a 34-minute footage from the Ranbir Kapoor-led film has been certified and it offers fans a tease of what it is touted to be one of the most ambitious Indian film adaptations of all time.
According to the Australian Classification Board's listing, the footage of the Nitesh Tiwari directorial has been awarded an 'M' (Mature) classification for "moderate violence."
'M' classification and its meaning
As per the Australian guideline, an 'M' (Mature) classification is an advisory rating. Films and computer games classified as 'M' are 'not recommended for children under the age of 15'. They can have content such as 'violence and themes that require a mature outlook'. Children under the age of 15 may legally access this content.
'Ramayana' synopsis
A brief synopsis of the film was also shared on the site that reads, "An ancient epic follows a young prince and princess whose marriage and subsequent exile mark the beginning of a legendary journey. Their story of love, duty and destiny sets the stage for greater challenges ahead."
'Ramayana' gears up for trailer launch
The latest certification comes just days before the makers are expected to unveil the film's theatrical trailer. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India granted the trailer a 'U' (Universal) certificate. As per the update, the film will have two trailers, with one approximately 4 minutes long and the other with a runtime of 4 minutes and 15 seconds.
While the trailers are expected to roll out next week, on July 24, the 34-minute-clip sent to the Australian certification is understood to be for a separate presentation of the film and not the theatrical trailer. While it is still unclear what the contents of this clip is, online chatter indicates that it could be the same footage previously screened at CinemaCon early this year.
About the film
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman.
Produced by Namit Malhotra, the two-part epic features music by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer. The film will release in a two-part epic saga, with the first part slated to release on Diwali 2026 and the second instalment scheduled to arrive on Diwali 2027.
The highly anticipated film mentioned in the report is director Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana.
Here are the key details regarding its Australian classification and upcoming rollout:
1. The Australian 'M' Rating
The Australian Classification Board certified a 34-minute exclusive footage block of Ramayana with an 'M' (Mature) classification.
The Reason: The rating was issued due to "moderate violence" featured in the epic combat and battle sequences.
What it means: An 'M' rating in Australia is advisory, not legally restrictive.
While children under 15 are legally allowed to watch it, the board formally states the content is "not recommended for children under the age of 15" as it requires a more mature outlook. The Footage: While the theatrical trailers have received a family-friendly 'U' (Universal) certificate from India's CBFC, this specific 34-minute segment sent to Australia is understood to be a separate extensive presentation, likely the same footage prepared for global exhibitions and preview markets.
2. Global Presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026
The certification comes at a massive time for the project's global marketing push. Ramayana is officially heading to San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC).
The Date & Venue: The film will have a major international showcase on July 23, 2026, inside Ballroom 20 (the convention's second-largest venue with a 4,800-seat capacity).
The Panel: Producer Namit Malhotra, director Nitesh Tiwari, Ranbir Kapoor, and Yash will all be in attendance to present an exclusive first look to the global audience.
Ramayana is only the second Indian film history to get a panel of this scale at SDCC, following Kalki 2898 AD.
3. Trailer and Release Timeline
Official Trailer Launch: The highly awaited theatrical trailer is scheduled to premiere worldwide the very next day on July 24, 2026.
Grand Visual Scale: The two-part civilizational epic features VFX backed by Academy Award-winning studio DNEG, with a massive musical collaboration between A.R. Rahman and Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer.
Theatrical Rollout: The cinematic saga is split into two halves. Ramayana: Part 1 is slated for a grand theatrical release on Diwali 2026, while Part 2 will follow a year later on Diwali 2027.
