Karnataka: Rare ‘Medusa pineapple’ with 60 fruits found in Uttara Kannada

An unusual and fascinating sight has emerged from Shevali village in Uttara Kannada district, where a farmer has discovered a rare pineapple plant bearing more than 60 tiny fruits on a single stem. This extraordinary growth has left locals and agricultural experts intrigued, drawing attention to what appears to be a unique or exotic variety of pineapple.

A Rare And Fascinating Sight

For farmers in this region, protecting crops is a constant challenge due to frequent attacks by monkeys, squirrels, wild boars, and civets. Pineapple plants, in particular, are highly vulnerable once the fruits begin to develop. However, this particular plant has managed to remain untouched by animals.

Initially, it appeared like any ordinary pineapple plant. Over time, however, it began producing numerous miniature pineapples clustered around the main fruit. These small fruits are not typically meant for consumption and resemble decorative formations. While it remains unclear whether the primary fruit is sweet, the plant has become a striking visual attraction.

Possible Foreign Variety

According to Abdullah Dalavai, Horticulture Officer from Ramanagar, the plant may belong to a foreign variety originating from countries such as Thailand or Taiwan. The farmer reportedly purchased the plant from a nursery in Siddapur, where it was described as an exotic species at the time of sale.

Identified As ‘Medusa Pineapple’

Preliminary online research suggests that the plant could be a ‘Medusa pineapple’, a rare variety belonging to the Bromeliad family. Native to Thailand, this plant is primarily cultivated for ornamental purposes rather than for regular consumption.

The fruit is said to have a sweet and slightly sour taste, with the base being the sweetest part. A single Medusa pineapple can produce dozens, and sometimes even hundreds, of small fruitlets attached to the main body. This variety is gradually gaining popularity in tropical regions, including parts of India such as Kerala.

An extraordinary horticultural phenomenon has indeed surfaced in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, where a farmer in Shevali village discovered a rare Medusa pineapple plant bearing over 60 miniature fruits on a single stem.

Reports from April 2, 2026, indicate that this unusual plant has become a major local attraction, drawing both curious visitors and agricultural experts to the farm.

What is a Medusa Pineapple?

The "Medusa" variety (scientifically part of the Bromeliad family) is a rare mutation or specific cultivar where the central fruit is surrounded by dozens—sometimes hundreds—of tiny "fruitlets," resembling the snakes on the head of the mythical Greek figure, Medusa.

  • Origin: Experts believe this specific plant likely originated from Thailand or Taiwan. The farmer reportedly purchased it from a nursery in Siddapur, where it was sold as an "exotic" species.

  • Appearance: Unlike a standard pineapple, which produces one large fruit, this version produces a primary central fruit with numerous smaller, perfectly formed pineapples clustered around its base and sides.

  • Edibility: While the primary central fruit is edible and described as having a sweet-yet-tart flavor, the tiny surrounding "babies" are largely ornamental. They are often too small or fibrous for regular consumption.

Why is this find significant?

  1. Rare Survival: Farmers in the Uttara Kannada region face significant challenges from monkeys, wild boars, and squirrels. Remarkably, this eye-catching plant managed to grow to maturity without being damaged by local wildlife.

  2. Climate Adaptability: While these are more common in Southeast Asia and parts of Kerala, finding a thriving specimen with over 60 fruits in Karnataka suggests that the local tropical climate is highly suitable for such exotic varieties.

  3. Ornamental Potential: Horticulture officials, including those from Ramanagar, have noted that because of its striking visual appeal, there is growing interest in cultivating this variety for decorative gardens and luxury floral displays.

It is a fascinating example of how biodiversity and global plant trade are bringing unique agricultural wonders to local Indian farms.
