For most Indians, summer and mangoes are almost inseparable. From juicy Alphonsos to sweet Banganapallis, the mango season is something people eagerly wait for all year. But have you ever imagined having your own mango tree without owning land, farming, or even visiting an orchard?
A startup from Kochi is turning that idea into reality. The company, called Rent A Tree, allows customers to lease an entire mango tree for a season. Instead of buying mangoes from a store, people can simply rent a tree online and receive the fruit harvested directly from it.
The concept sounds unusual at first, but it is gaining attention for a reason. It promises naturally ripened mangoes, supports farmers, and removes the worry of middlemen.
In a country where mango lovers often struggle to find truly natural fruit, the idea striking a chord.
A MANGO TREE YOU CAN RENT
The concept is surprisingly simple. Customers visit the platform, choose a mango tree from a listed orchard, and lease it for the season.
The starting price is around Rs 10,300 for a tree. In return, customers receive the entire harvest from that tree, which can be up to 90 kilograms of mangoes during the season.
The orchards are located in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, regions known for their mango cultivation.
Once a customer selects a tree, the farmers handle everything from caring for the tree to harvesting the fruit. When the mangoes are ready, they are packed and delivered to the customer.
In simple terms, you get the experience of owning a mango tree without doing any farming.
FARM-TO-HOME IN A NEW WAY
The idea also reflects a growing trend among urban consumers: people want to know where their food comes from.
Farm-to-table movements have been gaining popularity across India, especially after the pandemic, when many people became more conscious about food quality and sourcing.
Renting a tree takes that idea a step further. Instead of buying fruit from an unknown source, customers know exactly which orchard—and sometimes which tree their mangoes come from.
For families, it also adds a unique emotional touch. Some people even treat the rented tree as "their tree" for the season, following its harvest updates from the farm.
A NEW SUMMER TREND?
Whether it becomes a widespread trend remains to be seen, but the idea is already generating curiosity online.
For mango lovers, the idea of receiving boxes of mangoes directly from "their own tree" sounds appealing. For farmers, it offers a new way to sell produce.
And for a country obsessed with mangoes, renting a tree might just become the newest summer flex.
After all, saying "these mangoes came from my tree" has a very different ring to it, even if that tree is miles away in an orchard.
The startup you’re thinking of is Rent A Tree, a Kochi-based venture founded by entrepreneur Umesh Damodaran.
The idea is simple: you pay a one-time fee to "rent" a specific tree, and in return, you get the entire yield delivered to your doorstep as the fruits ripen.
How the "Rent a Tree" Model Works
The startup manages around 250 acres of orchards across major mango-growing hubs like Ratnagiri (Maharashtra), Dindigul (Tamil Nadu), and Palakkad (Kerala).
The Packages: They offer three main tiers based on the expected harvest:
Base: ~30–50 kg of mangoes.
Standard: ~45–75 kg of mangoes.
Max (The 90kg Plan): Up to 60–90 kg of mangoes.
Pricing: Rates typically start around ₹10,300 per season, though prices can fluctuate based on the variety (like premium Alphonso) and the timing of the booking.
Digital Connection: Once you rent a tree, you get a dashboard with video updates every 10 days.
You can watch "your" tree blossom, grow, and finally be harvested. Logistics: The startup handles all the "dirty work"—pruning, watering, and pest control. When the mangoes reach peak maturity, they are handpicked and shipped directly to you in multiple batches over the harvest window (usually February to June).
Why People are Loving It
Beyond the novelty of saying "I own a mango tree," the startup addresses a few major pain points in the fruit industry:
Guaranteed Ripening: Most store-bought mangoes are picked at 75% maturity and artificially ripened with chemicals to survive transport. Rent A Tree allows the fruit to ripen naturally on the branch, ensuring a much better taste.
Supporting Farmers: The company leases land from farmers at fair rates, helping them avoid debt cycles and middlemen who often buy crops at low prices.
Traceability: In an era of food safety concerns, customers know exactly which farm—and which specific tree—their fruit came from.
Current Status (March 2026)
As of this month, the startup has capped its available trees at around 200 to ensure quality control, with a significant number already booked for the 2026 season.
