Rohit Sharma points out India's biggest challenge going into the T20 World Cup

India go into the T20 World Cup 2026 as favourites to win the tournament. The world No.1 T20I side has been in rampaging form over the past year and is expected to race into the semi-finals of the competition. However, former India captain Rohit Sharma has pointed out that the path may not be as straightforward as it appears.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Rohit explained what he believes will be India's biggest challenge. According to him, the team management will be torn between playing two specialist spinners in Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy, or sticking with Varun alone through the tournament.

India have leaned heavily on their spin attack over the last year, with Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel dominating opposition line-ups. Rohit, however, pointed out that the tournament's timing — during the transition from winter to spring — will bring heavy dew into play during evening matches.

"The biggest challenge for captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir will be how to play both Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy together. If you want that combination, you can only do it if you play with two seamers, which is a big challenge," Rohit Sharma said on Hotstar ahead of the World Cup.

Dew Will Heavily Affect T20 World Cup: Rohit Sharma

Playing three spinners would put India in a difficult position in terms of balance. If Axar, Kuldeep and Varun all feature, India would be forced to sacrifice Arshdeep Singh. In that scenario, India would operate with one specialist seamer in Jasprit Bumrah, along with two pace-bowling all-rounders in Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya.

Rohit said it would not be an easy call for Suryakumar Yadav and Gambhir to settle on a fixed playing XI, as leaving out any player would mean dropping one of the best in the world.

"Looking at conditions in India, like in this New Zealand series, there is a lot of dew. In February and March, dew will be heavy across most parts as winter ends. Even in Mumbai, which doesn't get cold, there's still dew. I'd say 90-95% of grounds in India have dew. That's the challenge," Rohit said.

"What do the coach and captain think? Are they comfortable with three spinners? Then they can play spin, but there's no fixed rule. You have to drop a pacer, which may not be right. It depends on the thinking of the team leadership," he concluded.

India begin their T20 World Cup campaign on February 7 against the USA. They will play group-stage matches in Mumbai, Delhi, Colombo and Ahmedabad.

As India gears up to host the 2026 T20 World Cup (starting February 7), former captain Rohit Sharma has identified a specific tactical dilemma that he believes will be the team's greatest hurdle: The "Three-Spinner" Balance vs. The Dew Factor.

Speaking recently on JioHotstar, Rohit highlighted that while India has a surplus of world-class talent, the environmental conditions in India during February and March make the playing XI a "selection headache" for captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir.

1. The Spin Duo Dilemma

Rohit pointed out that India’s biggest challenge is finding a way to play both Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy together.

  • The Conflict: To play both specialist wrist-spinners alongside an all-rounder like Axar Patel, India would likely have to drop a specialist seamer (like Arshdeep Singh).

  • The Risk: Going with only one specialist seamer (Jasprit Bumrah) puts immense pressure on pace-bowling all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube to fill the remaining overs.

2. The "Heavy Dew" Warning

The timing of the tournament—transitioning from winter to spring—is the core of the problem.

  • Wet Ball: Rohit noted that 90–95% of grounds in India will experience heavy dew during evening matches.

  • Tactical Nightmare: Dew makes it nearly impossible for spinners to grip the ball, often rendering a spin-heavy attack toothless in the second innings.

  • Quote: "The real challenge will be whether you can play Kuldeep and Varun together. If you do that, you are almost forced to go in with only two specialist seamers, and that's not easy."

3. Key Players to Watch

Despite the challenges, Rohit identified two "X-factors" he believes are non-negotiable for the XI:

  • Arshdeep Singh: For his ability to take early wickets and execute yorkers at the death.

  • Hardik Pandya: As the "glue" that allows India to play six bowling options without losing batting depth.

India's Group A Schedule

India begins their title defense at the Wankhede Stadium. Their group consists of:

  • February 7: vs USA (Mumbai)

  • February 15: vs Pakistan (Ahmedabad)

  • Other opponents: Namibia, Netherlands
