French President Emmanuel Macron drew widespread attention, and questions about his health, after appearing in aviator-style sunglasses while delivering a speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. Macron wore the shades as he addressed global leaders on issues including multilateralism, rising global instability, and France’s participation in military exercises in Greenland alongside Denmark amid tensions with the United States.
At one point, he joked with the audience, saying, “It’s a time of peace, stability and predictability,” prompting laughter, before adding more seriously, “It’s clear we are reaching a time of instability, imbalances.” The sunglasses quickly went viral online, with viewers questioning why the French leader kept them on indoors during a high-profile speech.
"Emmanuel Macron wears Top Gun-style sunglasses during his speech at the WEF in Davos (2026)," a user on X quipped. "Macron is sporting the Top Gun look at WEF… Place your bets, who punched him?" another X user posted.
The appearance came just days after Macron was seen with a visibly bloodshot, puffy eye during an outdoor troop inspection. Addressing the issue directly in a New Year’s address to France’s armed forces, he reassured troops about his condition.
“Please pardon the unsightly appearance of my eye. It is, of course, something completely harmless,” Macron said, according to The Associated Press.
He later added jokingly, “Simply see an unintentional reference to the ‘Eye of the Tiger’… For those who catch the reference, it is a sign of determination,” nodding to the Survivor song featured in Rocky III.
According to AP, Macron had already been seen wearing sunglasses during the earlier outdoor inspection on the same day he acknowledged the eye issue, suggesting the Davos appearance followed the same precaution.
